Ship's Divisions

Frank Nielsen, a plankowner who served on Wasp in 1943 - 46, sent a note describing the ship's division designations during that time. He pointed out that some of the designations may have changed after WW-II. I hope it helps you remember a few things about Wasp and its crew.


Frank's WW-II Division List

 

A Division - Machine Shop and others;

B Division - Fire Room, Boiler Tenders, Fireman, Oil Shack and others;

E Division - Electricians and others;

F Division - Firecontrol (guns);

H Division - Sickbay, Medical and Dental;

K1, K2, & K3 Divisions - Ships Radar, Signalmen, Radiomen, and all communications;

M Division - Motor Mechanics and others;

MAA Division - Master-at-Arms (Webmaster note: These guys broke up some darn good card games in the '60s);

N Division - Navigation;

R1 & R2 Divisions - Ship Fitters, Hull Division, Damage Control and others;

S1, S2, & S3 Divisions - Storekeepers, Barbers, Cobbler, Cooks, Bakers, Laundry, Tailor Shop, Commissary and Messcooks;

The Deck Divisions:

1st & 2nd Divisions - 5" Gunnery, Motor Whale Boats, all Sea and Docking details, etc.

3rd & 4th Divisions - 40MM Gunnery, Motor Whale Boats, all Sea and Docking details, etc.

5th Division - 20MM Gunnery, Motor Whale Boats, all Sea and Docking details, etc.

6th Division - Marine Detachment, 20MM Gunnery, Brig and Guard Details

 

The Air Department:

V1 - Plane handlers, catapult crew, arresting gear, etc.

V2 - Various Airedale Specialties

V2-B - Bomber Plane Captains and Engineering Crew

V2-F - Fighter Plane Captains and Engineering Crew

V2-G - Gasoline and Oil Detail

V2-S - Metalsmiths

V2-T - Torpedo Plane Captains and Engineering Crew

V3-(?) - Photo,Aerography and maybe Parachute Riggers

V3-R - Radar and Radio

V4 - Hanger Deck Control (?)

V6 - Aviation Ordinance (guns, bombs, torpedoes and rockets)

V7 - Air Engineering Office
