"Ross" Jolley was a Photographers Mate, third class, aboard Wasp during WW II. His family contributed these images to share with us all and as a memorial to him. The notes and captions are based on comments made by Ross.

The USS Wasp underway approximately 200 miles east of Tokyo at the time of Japan's surrender.

 

 

During their off-moments, Wasp's crewmen enjoy a fast game of volleyball on the flight deck.

 

 

January 1943. The Marines of the Wasp, under the leadership of Captain Rossacker, expedite practice landings at Trinidad during the ship's shake-down cruise.

 

 

October 1944. The Wasp follows a cruiser through the mine infested waters of the South China Sea.

 

 

1944.  Majuro - an atoll in the Marshall Islands.

 

 

Bremerton, Washington. April, 1945. Commander Slattery, ship's Executive officer, being awarded a citation for heroism during a Japanese attack on the Wasp. Crewman were also receiving Purple Hearts for injuries received during same attack (March 19, 1945).

 

July, 1945. White splashes mark the graves of two TBF torpedo planes, following a mid-air crash during practice dive-bombing raid on target being towed by Wasp.

 

June, 1945. Officers and crewmen stand at flight-deck parade for Captain's inspection as Wasp pulls into Pearl Harbor.

While operating off the coast of Japan, the USS Wasp pulls along side an oil tanker to take on fuel and mail.

 

 

An SB2C "Hell-Diver" goes "in the drink" after the motor conks out during take-off. The pilot and crewman were picked up by a destroyer.
